Herbal supplements are a part of many people’s health routines, especially older adults. Because some supplements are labeled as natural or homeopathic, consumers assume that they are safe (and in many cases, they are).
However, certain herbal supplements have been known to raise the risk of plastic surgery complications. If you are planning to have plastic surgery in Chicago with Dr. John Bull, it’s important that he understand how you manage your health. This includes your medical history, any chronic medical conditions and the supplements, prescription/OTC meds and vitamins you take.
You will discuss this information during your pre-operative consultation at least a few weeks prior to your surgery. Dr. Bull will explain the supplements that could have potentially harmful side effects, and advise when to stop taking them.
Supplements that May Cause Bleeding
- Dong quai
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin E
Supplements that May Interfere with Anesthesia
- St. John’s Wort
Supplements that May React with Other Medications Used During/After Surgery
- Aloe vera
Find the Mayo Clinic’s list of supplements to avoid here.
If you are not sure about an herbal supplement, bring the container to your consultation to show Dr. Bull. Sometimes, a supplement may contain dozens of compounds and not all of the ingredients may be known, warns the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Also, make sure that your emergency contact (family member or friend) is aware of the supplements (and vitamins and medications) you take. This is wise in case a situation arises in which s/he needs to relay this information to medical professionals.
It is recommended that you stop the use of herbal supplements at least one to two weeks prior to surgery to prevent harmful side effects. Dr. Bull will provide more information during the pre-operative planning stage.

Dr. John Bull often works with mothers who are experiencing physical changes as a result of pregnancy and nursing. These changes bring about a dichotomy of emotions about motherhood: pride and joy for their growing families, but shame and embarrassment about the way they look. Many mothers in this situation avoid the pool, the gym and the camera because they feel ashamed of their appearance.
If you, too, have less-than-enthusiastic thoughts about your post-baby appearance, and have tried dieting and exercising to no avail, Dr. Bull has a solution: mommy makeover, which is a combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to improve the areas of your body and face affected by pregnancy and nursing.
Let’s review possible mommy makeover combinations to give you a better sense of what is possible.
Breast Lift & Tummy Tuck
Dr. Bull’s mommy makeover patients usually share the same primary concerns: sagging breasts and excess skin/fat in the abdominal area.
Breast lift elevates the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall, eliminating excess skin and creating a perkier and more youthful-looking breast contour. If the nipples point downward, Dr. Bull will correct this; it may involve relocating the nipple higher on the breast mound.
Tummy tuck shapes and sculpts a stretched, saggy and flabby abdomen. Through incisions in the lower abdomen, Dr. Bull will repair weakened/separated ab muscles, remove excess skin and fat and tighten the remaining skin so it lays taut against the body. The result is a flatter, firmer stomach.
Breast Augmentation & Tummy Tuck
Some women simply desire larger, more voluptuous breasts after pregnancy and nursing, and do not require breast lift surgery. Dr. Bull can place saline or silicone implants to enhance the bust line so the breasts fill out a bra or swimsuit more attractively, and perform tummy tuck surgery for abdominal tightening and toning.
Breast Augmentation & Breast Lift & Tummy Tuck
Dr. Bull can also combine breast lift with breast augmentation to enhance both the size and position of the breasts. First, he will remove excess skin and reshape the existing breast tissue to create a breast mound higher on the chest; then, he will place implants. Finally, he will tighten the abdomen through tummy tuck surgery.
Breast Augmentation and/or Breast Lift with Tummy Tuck and/or Lipo
This approach provides all of the benefits of breast augmentation and/or breast lift with tummy tuck, with the added benefit of liposuction of the hips, upper back or lower back. It allows Dr. Bull to contour the entire area, treating the tummy with tummy tuck surgery and the torso and sides of the body with liposuction. By doing so, he maximizes the tummy tuck results and creates gorgeous curves around the body.
How Dr. Bull Approaches Mommy Makeover
Mommy makeover procedures may be performed during the same surgery (requiring only one round of anesthesia and one surgical recovery period), or the procedures may be staged out separately, giving you the opportunity to recover in between each surgery. Dr. Bull will explain the pros and cons of each scenario with you and help you make an informed decision about your treatment plan. We will take into account your safety when recommending combinations and timing options.
