What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel involves applying a mild chemical solution to the areas of the face, neck or hands that are being treated. As the solution dries and is peeled off, it gently removes with it the damaged first layer of skin, revealing the smoother textured skin underneath.
Depending on the kind of treatment, the strength of the chemicals may differ. A mixture of light solutions can be used for a simple exfoliation, whereas more mild chemicals can be used for deeper immersion into the skin. All chemicals, however, are safe and gentle and cause minimal discomfort.
What Can a Chemical Peel Treat?
Chemical peels have been shown to help improve several minor skin concerns, including:
- Age spots or dark spots
- Irregular areas of skin pigmentation
- Rough skin and scaly patches
- Scar appearance
- Acne and acne scars
- Minor wrinkles and fine lines
- Sun damage
There are also some skin problems, however, that are not effectively treated with chemical peels:
- Loose or sagging skin
- Deep lines or wrinkles
- Broken capillaries
- Deep scars
- Size of pores
For these and other skin problems, consult us at The John Bull Center for the best course of treatment. Doctor Bull and his skilled medical team aim to provide the best plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments in the area, and offer patients a casual atmosphere to voice their true needs. Your individualized plan will be based on your unique concerns, and we will be there with you every step of the way.
What are the Side Effects of a Chemical Peel?
Mild and temporary itching, redness and burning sensations are typically reported after a chemical peel treatment. These usually alleviate within a few days. As this treatment leaves skin temporarily more vulnerable to the sun, care should be taken to shield the face with broad-spectrum sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and minimum necessary sun exposure during hours of direct sunlight.
