]]>If you could have bigger breasts for only one night — without the help of a push-up bra or a pair of chicken cutlets — would you consider it?
Some plastic surgeons are offering temporary breast enhancement, which involves injecting saline into the breasts to add fullness and shape, according to a recent article in The New York Times.
The saline injections instantly expand the bustline for bigger cleavage, yet the effects only last about 24 hours before the body absorbs the saline. This technique has gained a following amongst women who want to enhance their breasts in anticipation of a big event or special occasion, like a wedding or a vacation. Other women use the technique as a way to preview the results of breast augmentation.
The idea of temporary breast enhancement is certainly convenient; it takes place during a brief, in-office procedure, and doesn’t require any follow-up. However, is it safe?
Reactions are mixed. When asked by the NYT for comment, the president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Michael C. Edwards, called temporary breast enhancement “a party trick.”
Temporary breast enhancement isn’t necessarily dangerous, but any type of injection carries some degree of risk, including infection, nerve damage and blood pooling under the skin. Some plastic surgeons have also pointed out that the injections could cause harm to the milk ducts.
In a cosmetic sense, the injections could cause the breast skin to stretch, which later changes the shape or natural support in the breast. “You’re altering the architecture of the breast. I would be concerned that you would be taking away some intrinsic support in the breast,” Dr. Edwards said.
Perhaps the biggest concern is that temporary breast enhancement is often performed by people without the right credentials. There are stories in the news practically every week about a patient suffering at the hands of a plastic surgeon imposter who used dangerous materials.
Temporary breast enhancement is currently under review by the FDA, which will decide whether it’s a safe practice.
A Better Way to Enhance the Breasts
Traditional breast augmentation remains very popular; in fact, more than 313,000 women had breast implants placed in 2013. Breast implants are designed as long-term devices, and only need to be replaced if a complication arises, or the patient decides she no longer likes the appearance. Dr. John Bull, one of Chicago’s most respected breast augmentation surgeons, offers saline and silicone implants to improve the size, shape and fullness of the breasts.
Although we are not currently offering temporary breast enhancement, we would like to know whether you would consider the procedure! Comment below and share your thoughts. ]]>A recent study revealed a surprising therapeutic benefit to abdominoplasty surgery — relief from stress urinary incontinence.
According to the findings of a study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the journal of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the majority of patients who pre-operatively reported incontinence noted an improvement in their symptoms after surgery. The study involved 250 females who had cosmetic abdominoplasty.
The women were asked to take a survey prior to surgery. One hundred women completed the survey, with 50 of them reporting problems with incontinence (i.e., unintentional loss of urine during a physical activity such as coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercise). Of that group, 30 women (60 percent) said their incontinence symptoms improved. The other 40 percent reported no change in symptoms. Lack of previous C-section surgery was a predictor of the improvement in incontinence symptoms after tummy tuck.
According to study author Dr. James D. McMahan, the catalyst for the study occurred when a tummy tuck patient casually mentioned during a follow-up visit that she no longer had urine leakage while laughing or coughing.
Dr. McMahan isn’t exactly sure why the surgery cures incontinence. It could occur because during surgery, the surgeon pulls up the abdominal skin and “may get enough of a pull on the urethra to reduce hypermobility and incontinence,” he said.
Further research will help in achieving a clearer understanding of who can expect this benefit after tummy tuck.
Cosmetic Benefits of Tummy Tuck
In addition to possibly curing incontinence issues, tummy tuck produces a flat and firm abdominal contour by removing excess skin and fat. The procedure also repairs abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated because of pregnancy or excessive weight gain. Traditional tummy tuck treats the entire abdomen, and “mini” tummy tuck focuses on the area beneath the belly button.
Tummy tuck is often part of a woman’s “mommy makeover,” a combination of procedures designed to reverse the physical effects of pregnancy and nursing.

]]>Staying active is especially important as we head into the fall season and the holidays loom in the not-too-distant future. Establishing a fitness routine that you love can help you avoid gaining weight with holiday-related treats.
Are you in a fitness rut and looking for some inspiration? Think about trying a new workout inspired by your favorite svelte celebrity. We’ve rounded up the most popular picks to share with you.
Lagree Method – Sofia Vergara
Sofia is a fan of the Lagree Method, which trainer Jennifer Yates calls “bodybuilding morphed into Pilates.” Sample moves: squats, deadlifts and lunges on the “Megaformer” machine to tighten and tone the buttocks. The Lagree Method founder, Sebastien Lagree, developed the workouts after noticing that his clients wanted to combine Pilates with heart-pumping cardio moves. Lagree believes an average-sized woman can burn 700 calories during a 50-minute class.
Find a studio that offers the Lagree method here.
Aerial Dancing – Pink
Pink is such an avid fan of aerial dancing — which involves doing acrobatic moves while suspended in air — that she has incorporated it into her shows. You may have seen her death-defying moves during a concert or Grammy performance. If you’ve never done an inversion in the air, a good way to ease into the anti-gravity fitness trend is by taking an aerial yoga class. AntiGravity Yoga is great for building strength and working the core and arm muscles.
The Tracy Anderson Method – Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth maintains her enviable physique with the help of Tracy Anderson, a fitness guru who charges $900 for a monthly membership to her New York City studio. (Tracy also has a DVD program called Metamorphosis and an Xbox One series called Transform.) The Tracy Anderson Method involves thousands of moves, many of them mat-based, for a full body workout. A typical Method workout involves a dance-inspired warm-up and a series of complex, weighted leg lifts designed to “surprise” the muscles so they don’t adapt to any particular exercise.
Circuit Training – Megan Fox
Megan told E! News that she currently works out only twice a week — but she makes it count. She alternates bursts of cardio with “really heavy weights” for a fat-blasting, physique-sculpting workout. Her diet is no joke, either. Megan has eliminated all carbohydrates from her diet and doesn’t allow herself any cheat days.
Trampoline Workouts – Julianne Hough
Indoor trampoline parks like Sky Zone are a great way to get fit and feel like a kid again! Julianne loves a class called SkyRobics, which combines calisthenics with strength-building aerobics and core exercises. It’s also a great workout to improve coordination and balance.
Find a Sky Zone location by clicking here.
Flywheel – Jessica Alba
Jessica loves Flywheel, which is an intense workout that combines indoor cycling, weights, energizing music and encouraging instructors. Classes last 45 to 60 minutes and involve climbs and descents while working the arms with weighted bars.

]]>Summer is a wonderfully fun season, but it has a noticeable effect on the skin. Sun exposure, changes in oil production and other factors can leave skin looking dull and damaged. As we look forward to welcoming the fall season, you might want to consider taking some steps to correct skin imperfections and flaws.
Enjoy flawless skin this fall with tips from one of Chicago’s leading plastic surgeons, Dr. John Bull.
Rejuvenate and Pamper
Clinical skin care products can give your skin a radiant glow from the inside out. We carry the Obagi, SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals lines at our practice, all of which are specially formulated with the finest ingredients. Our aesthetician team can curate a product regimen for your unique skin care needs (perhaps you struggle with acne or hyperpigmentation, are simply seeking a basic cleansing and moisturizing routine or have a different skin care goal in mind). These lines offer products for all skin types, including dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin.
Smooth Wrinkles and Lines
Are you self-conscious of lines or wrinkles around your eyes, nose or mouth? Treatment with Botox or dermal fillers will smooth lines for a rested, youthful appearance. These treatments are conveniently performed in our office with minimal discomfort or downtime. Our office uses injectable products that have been cleared by the FDA for safety.
We offer you the opportunity to earn discounts on Botox and Juvederm products with the Brilliant Distinctions program. You will accumulate points for every treatment, which can then be redeemed for free treatments.
Even Out Tone and Texture
If you struggle with uneven skin tone or texture, laser skin resurfacing can help. This procedure removes damaged, unwanted tissue to reveal fresh, younger-looking skin underneath. Laser skin resurfacing is an excellent and effective non-surgical treatment that does not require significant downtime.
Get a Check-Up
Nearly 80 percent of skin cancers are found in sun-exposed areas of the face. Since you’ve probably sunned yourself at least once or twice this summer, schedule a professional check-up to look for any suspicious moles, bumps, growths or other skin abnormalities.
If a check-up does find signs of skin cancer, Dr. Bull can remove the affected tissue and restore normal appearance to the treated area. Using advanced techniques, Dr. Bull will minimize damage to the surrounding skin and disguise any scars.
Wear Jewel Tones
Once you’ve achieved a flawless complexion through your new skin care products, Botox treatment or laser skin resurfacing, wear clothing and accessories that complement your coloring. Jewel tones are universally flattering and very in-style during fall. For their Fall 2014 Fashion Color Report, Pantone selected a palette including Radiant Orchid, Sangria, Bright Cobalt and Cypress. Brightly colored blouses, scarves, statement necklaces or earrings in jewel tones will bring attention to your exquisite skin and unique beauty.
Schedule a Skin Care Consultation
If you would like more information about any of the skin care treatments or products mentioned, please call the office of Dr. John Bull at (630) 717-6000 or send us an email.

]]>Herbal supplements are a part of many people’s health routines, especially older adults. Because some supplements are labeled as natural or homeopathic, consumers assume that they are safe (and in many cases, they are).
However, certain herbal supplements have been known to raise the risk of plastic surgery complications. If you are planning to have plastic surgery in Chicago with Dr. John Bull, it’s important that he understand how you manage your health. This includes your medical history, any chronic medical conditions and the supplements, prescription/OTC meds and vitamins you take.
You will discuss this information during your pre-operative consultation at least a few weeks prior to your surgery. Dr. Bull will explain the supplements that could have potentially harmful side effects, and advise when to stop taking them.
Supplements that May Cause Bleeding
- Dong quai
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin E
Supplements that May Interfere with Anesthesia
- St. John’s Wort
Supplements that May React with Other Medications Used During/After Surgery
- Aloe vera
Find the Mayo Clinic’s list of supplements to avoid here.
If you are not sure about an herbal supplement, bring the container to your consultation to show Dr. Bull. Sometimes, a supplement may contain dozens of compounds and not all of the ingredients may be known, warns the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Also, make sure that your emergency contact (family member or friend) is aware of the supplements (and vitamins and medications) you take. This is wise in case a situation arises in which s/he needs to relay this information to medical professionals.
It is recommended that you stop the use of herbal supplements at least one to two weeks prior to surgery to prevent harmful side effects. Dr. Bull will provide more information during the pre-operative planning stage.

]]>Dr. John Bull often works with mothers who are experiencing physical changes as a result of pregnancy and nursing. These changes bring about a dichotomy of emotions about motherhood: pride and joy for their growing families, but shame and embarrassment about the way they look. Many mothers in this situation avoid the pool, the gym and the camera because they feel ashamed of their appearance.
If you, too, have less-than-enthusiastic thoughts about your post-baby appearance, and have tried dieting and exercising to no avail, Dr. Bull has a solution: mommy makeover, which is a combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to improve the areas of your body and face affected by pregnancy and nursing.
Let’s review possible mommy makeover combinations to give you a better sense of what is possible.
Breast Lift & Tummy Tuck
Dr. Bull’s mommy makeover patients usually share the same primary concerns: sagging breasts and excess skin/fat in the abdominal area.
Breast lift elevates the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall, eliminating excess skin and creating a perkier and more youthful-looking breast contour. If the nipples point downward, Dr. Bull will correct this; it may involve relocating the nipple higher on the breast mound.
Tummy tuck shapes and sculpts a stretched, saggy and flabby abdomen. Through incisions in the lower abdomen, Dr. Bull will repair weakened/separated ab muscles, remove excess skin and fat and tighten the remaining skin so it lays taut against the body. The result is a flatter, firmer stomach.
Breast Augmentation & Tummy Tuck
Some women simply desire larger, more voluptuous breasts after pregnancy and nursing, and do not require breast lift surgery. Dr. Bull can place saline or silicone implants to enhance the bust line so the breasts fill out a bra or swimsuit more attractively, and perform tummy tuck surgery for abdominal tightening and toning.
Breast Augmentation & Breast Lift & Tummy Tuck
Dr. Bull can also combine breast lift with breast augmentation to enhance both the size and position of the breasts. First, he will remove excess skin and reshape the existing breast tissue to create a breast mound higher on the chest; then, he will place implants. Finally, he will tighten the abdomen through tummy tuck surgery.
Breast Augmentation and/or Breast Lift with Tummy Tuck and/or Lipo
This approach provides all of the benefits of breast augmentation and/or breast lift with tummy tuck, with the added benefit of liposuction of the hips, upper back or lower back. It allows Dr. Bull to contour the entire area, treating the tummy with tummy tuck surgery and the torso and sides of the body with liposuction. By doing so, he maximizes the tummy tuck results and creates gorgeous curves around the body.
How Dr. Bull Approaches Mommy Makeover
Mommy makeover procedures may be performed during the same surgery (requiring only one round of anesthesia and one surgical recovery period), or the procedures may be staged out separately, giving you the opportunity to recover in between each surgery. Dr. Bull will explain the pros and cons of each scenario with you and help you make an informed decision about your treatment plan. We will take into account your safety when recommending combinations and timing options.

]]>If you’re conscientious about your complexion, you may be interested to know that your diet can significantly affect your skin. Certain foods are great for wrinkle reduction, sun protection and overall improvement in the tone and texture of your skin. Make sure you’re getting complexion-boosting nutrients by incorporating the following foods into your diet.
Yogurt is full of protein, which helps firm skin and make it more resistant to wrinkles. Greek yogurt has extra protein in it for added benefit. Applying a yogurt-based product directly will calm irritated, dry or sensitive skin. Korres makes a soothing yogurt-based gel that freshens and comforts the skin of the face and body.
Packed with polyphenol antioxidants, this super-food makes the skin look rosier and healthier. According to Women’s Health magazine, pomegranate nourishes, hydrates and protects the skin. It offers cell regeneration, collagen production and anti-aging benefits.
Another great source of antioxidants is green tea, a beverage which has been shown to fight inflammation and may reverse the effects of sun damage. Green tea has more health benefits than other types of tea (e.g., black, white, oolong) because of the way the leaves at harvested and processed.
Experts recommend drinking green tea while it’s hot for the most potent dose of antioxidants.
Celebrity nutritionist Joy Bauer is one of the health gurus who espouse kidney beans for great skin. Zinc helps with cell turnover: assisting with the production of new cells and the sloughing off of dead skin. This improves the skin’s allover glow.
Tuna contains a nutrient called selenium that preserves elastin, the proteins that keeps your skin smooth and tight. Selenium may also buffer the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Other sources of selenium? Brazil nuts, eggs and shellfish.
Fish in general is great for clear skin because of its omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce dryness and inflammation.
Probably the most popular suggestion on this list, dark chocolate is rich in flavonols. These antioxidants not only reduce roughness in the skin, but also have been shown to have sun-protection qualities.
A 2013 study out of London found that people who ate 20 grams of dark chocolate (approximately half of a small bar) for 12 weeks could stay in the sun for twice as long without getting burned compared to those who didn’t eat any dark chocolate.

]]>For many of us, summer vacations are among the year’s highlights. Whether you embark on a two-week jaunt to a tropical island or a quick weekend getaway to a neighboring city, vacation is usually a relaxing time to decompress and regroup before returning to the daily grind. However, don’t let your diet and exercise routines fall by the wayside while you’re away from home.
Here are some ideas to help you stay fit during your summer vacation.
Plan Your Itinerary Wisely
Once you’ve decided on a destination, brainstorm a list of activities that you can work into your daily itinerary. For example, you could try any of the following:
- Scuba dive
- Horseback ride
- Beach volleyball
- Play frisbee
- Dance (try the local style like samba, tango or hula)
Don’t Rent a Car
If you don’t absolutely have to, challenge yourself to a car-free vacation. Use public transportation for longer distances (for example, hop on the train between European cities, or grab a bus from your resort into town in the Caribbean islands); otherwise, stick to walking.
Beach walks are an added challenge for your lower body, and city walking is a great way to burn calories while sightseeing. If you’re exploring a new-to-you locale, join a walking tour that touches on the city’s highlights. Wear a pedometer to track how many steps you take while you’re out and about.
Choose Lodging with a Kitchen
If you can, book a hotel room or condo with a kitchen so you can cook some of your meals. Restaurant food can be loaded with calories and fat, and often comes in huge portion sizes. Cooking meals on your own helps you control the portion size and healthfulness of your meals. It’s also cheaper!
Work Out in Your Room
If you’ve planned mostly sedentary activities (like lounging by the beach or pool), squeeze in a quick workout in the room. Bring along a resistance band or jumping rope. Do a few sets of body weight exercises (e.g., lunges, squats, push-ups). Get your heart pumping with burpees or jumping jacks. Use a chair to do some tricep dips or leg exercises.
Plan a Trip around a Marathon
If you’re a runner who’s serious about staying in shape during your vacation, choose a destination that’s hosting a marathon or other run/walk event. This is a great way to work out around other active individuals, stay on track with your fitness goals and even see a new part of your destination.

]]>There is a lot of information about breast implants circulating the Internet, and not all of it is true. Chicago breast surgeon John Bull clears up some of the most common breast implant myths.
Everyone will be able to tell I’ve had breast augmentation.
This depends on your ideal cosmetic outcome. If you opt for a moderately-sized implant that is proportional to your body frame and positioned correctly, your breasts will look natural after surgery. If you are skinny and choose to have large, round implants placed, it may be more obvious that you’ve had them augmented.
Worried about the way the implants will feel? Implant technology has significantly evolved to produce some incredibly natural-feeling implants that are practically indistinguishable from breast tissue.
Implants should always be placed underneath the muscle.
No, there are advantages to both the submuscular (under the muscle) and subglandular (in front of the muscle) approaches. Dr. Bull will advise which approach will yield the more beneficial outcome, depending on factors such as your body frame, amount of existing breast tissue and the type of implants you choose.
Breast implants need to be replaced every few years.
Breast implants are designed to last for at least 10 years without any problems. They only need to be replaced/removed if you are unhappy with their size or shape, or develop a rare complication such as capsular contracture (hardening around the implant). It’s important to keep in mind that breast implants will not stop the effects of gravity, and natural breasts do start to sag over time. At some point, breast lift may become an attractive option.
I will be in a lot of pain after surgery.
This depends on how much experience your breast surgeon has and techniques he or she uses. A seasoned and talented breast surgeon like Dr. Bull uses gentle techniques to reduce post-operative discomfort. Also, he can prescribe oral pain medication to quell any pain. Your breasts may feel sore or tender for several days after surgery, but you should not experience anything more than mild to moderate discomfort.
Breast implants will make my saggy breasts look perkier.
If your nipple sits at or below the bottom of your breast, an implant will make your breasts look bigger, but not any less saggy. You will need a combination breast augmentation/breast lift in order to raise the nipple to a higher position on the chest and restore a youthful-looking shape and perkiness to the breast.

]]>The official start to summer is looming, and for many people the summer months are a great time to get out of town. Vacation can be even more exciting if you’ve recently experienced a body transformation with Chicago plastic surgeon John Bull. Imagine how confident you’ll feel on the beaches of Cancun or hiking in Arizona with a tighter tummy, larger breasts or sculpted arms.
Here are some ideas to help you plan your next trip:
Turks and Caicos
Home to some of the world’s most stunning beaches, Turks and Caicos is the destination of choice for many posh jetsetters. Stay in a luxury resort on the shoreline and enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling and other water sports (while sporting a colorful, figure-flattering bikini!). Renowned chefs inject Caribbean flair into mouth-watering cuisine served al fresco.
Known to some as the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires has plenty to offer international travelers, including museums, history and nightlife. Check out art by Frida Kahlo or Diego Rivera, or take a trip to the Evita Museum to learn more about Eva Perón. The beautiful Teatro Colon houses opera and ballet performances and concerts by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra. Brush up on your tango skills in an exclusive dance club.
Sedona is known for its beautiful Red Rocks, which frame the view from town. Hike across trails that encircle Sedona before settling in at one of the town’s wellness resorts. A lot of the town’s hospitality fosters a healthy lifestyle — serving up green smoothies and organic meals and opportunities for yoga and meditation. Sedona is the perfect place to center yourself after a busy school year or sales quarter at work.
San Francisco has something for everyone: world-class cuisine, phenomenal shopping and attractions including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz. You could spend weeks exploring all of the diverse neighborhoods in the city. Hop on a cable car or set out on foot to visit Haight-Asbury or the Presidio, two of the city’s most famed areas.
Beautiful beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and plenty of culture make Cancun a top destination. Check into an all-inclusive resort where all of your meals and beverages are included, and prepare to receive some outstanding service. Once you’re settled, pick a shady chair by the pool or a spot on the sand and soak up the sun’s rays.
Not Yet Ready for Summer Vacation?
