Dr. Bull strives to achieve the very best results in liposuction for patients in the Naperville and Chicago area. Liposuction can give a more attractive and sculpted profile by removing stubborn areas of unwanted fat from many areas including the following: thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, waistline, upper arms, back, bra line, axilla, inner knee, chest area, cheeks, chin, neck, calves and ankles. The procedure is safe and quick and can be done in the office under local, tumescent as well as under iv sedation in the surgery center as well as general anesthesia. Please come in for a consultation to learn more about these options and develop a treatment plan with Dr. Bull that is right for you.
How is the Procedure done?
After marking the areas of unwanted fat, Dr. Bull will inject a saline solution that contains local anesthetic and epinephrine. This is commonly known as tumescent fluid. Once this is injected into the fat, it will decrease sensation to the area allowing for more comfort during the procedure. Sometimes, this is the only anesthetic given but again discuss this with Dr. Bull to see if this is appropriate for the amount of fat being treated and your comfort level with being awake for the procedure. Once the area is numb, which usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, Dr. Bull will begin the procedure. He uses a technique that has gained wide acceptance in recent years called SAFELipo. This stands for separation, aspiration, fat equalization. This technique uses a small cannula with a larger tip to separate the fat, then a smaller cannula is inserted under the skin to suction the separated fat. Once all the unwanted fat is removed, then another cannula is used to smooth out the remaining tissue to give a smoother even result. This technique allows a more even shrinking of the skin than the technique used years ago and has been used around the world in recent years. Dr. Bull is proud to offer this advancement in liposuction technique to his patients here in Naperville. Once the fat has been removed and the area equalized by smoothing out the tissue, the incisions are usually closed with tiny sutures. Dressings are placed and a foam pad applied as well as a compression garment to help decrease swelling and help the skin shrink down to the new improved contour, showing better definition of the body.
What is the Recovery?
Liposuction has minimal discomfort and has a short recovery time. The suctioned areas may be swollen and bruised, and you may feel a burning sensation that will resolve quickly. The discomfort will be controlled with oral medications prescribed by Dr. Bull, but you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days. Most patients can return to work depending on their job in 1 to 5 days depending on the extent of the procedure and the type of work you do. After the procedure you should start walking around the same day, but more strenuous activity should be avoided for one to two weeks. Dr. Bull will remove any stitches in 6 to 8 days. The final result will take 6 months to allow for the skin to shrink completely but most patients see improvement in their bodies by one week. The swelling will take several weeks to completely resolve and if you have any bruising this will improve greatly over the first week and usually has resolved completely by 2 weeks. Occasional mild discoloration will take longer but usually is resolved by 6 weeks.
